To Catch A Falling Leaf by Leonna
The season has changed from summer to fall
Leaves drift slowly off the trees so tall
They are gold - brown - and red - and green
What a display of colors to be seen
My hands reach out as my eyes are focused on one red leaf
Its descent directly at my waiting palms; then to my disbelief
Swoops back up, winding, swirling, twirling, and spiraling - to the ground
Quietly, playfully, teasingly without a single sound
After a while, I must stop to rest
And look at the tree almost bare, undressed
And wonder in silence,
will it shiver in the winter wind?
Leaves drift slowly off the trees so tall
They are gold - brown - and red - and green
What a display of colors to be seen
My hands reach out as my eyes are focused on one red leaf
Its descent directly at my waiting palms; then to my disbelief
Swoops back up, winding, swirling, twirling, and spiraling - to the ground
Quietly, playfully, teasingly without a single sound
After a while, I must stop to rest
And look at the tree almost bare, undressed
And wonder in silence,
will it shiver in the winter wind?
I was inspired to write this poem because I once lived in a house surrounded by many huge oak trees. During autumn, there would be leaves falling all day, throughout the season. I watched my own children hold their hands up in the air in an attempt to catch the leaves as they twirled around in the slightest breeze. It was their own game, easy and fun.
