Yesterday by Judy Burnette
I saw you only yesterday
Yet it seems so long ago;
When I am away from you
There is a longing in my soul.
I could not have known I'd miss you so
As we said our good-byes;
Or that this hunger inside me
Would take me by surprise.
I held you in my arms
Was it only yesterday?
I'll see you there tomorrow
But I need you here today.
To hold you close, to touch your face
This one thing I would choose;
I would change my tomorrows into yesterdays
So I could share them again with you.
Yet it seems so long ago;
When I am away from you
There is a longing in my soul.
I could not have known I'd miss you so
As we said our good-byes;
Or that this hunger inside me
Would take me by surprise.
I held you in my arms
Was it only yesterday?
I'll see you there tomorrow
But I need you here today.
To hold you close, to touch your face
This one thing I would choose;
I would change my tomorrows into yesterdays
So I could share them again with you.
This poem was written when missing a very close friend. We can't always be where we want to be, so memories of yesterday fill our thoughts.
