Counting by Tina K
One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for girls
Four for boys
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for secrets never to be told.
(Children’s Nursery Rhyme)

***
counting

one for youth
two for soul
three for recovery
four to be whole
five for danger
six for charm
seven for change
eight did no harm

as time goes by
eventually another
now number nine
just like the others

counting

one was taken
two destroyed
three’s mistaken
four was a toy
five wreaked havoc
six just played
seven was nothing
eight couldn’t have stayed

time for something different
so simple, so plain
now number nine
another drop of pain

counting

One of the largest parts of life is looking for love, and that is what this poem is about. It isn't a love poem, however, it is a chronicle of my personal quest for love in my life. The first seven lines are from a children's nursery rhyme which inspired the poem. I am not certain as to the origin or title of the nursery rhyme.
