Shine On by Angela K. Dyson
The star shines with such intense light,
everywhere its brightness is blinding
But I do not shield my eyes,
instead I walk towards the pulsating source
The light is so bright, heat so incredible -
- consuming my mind
I must go back,
back into the dull nothingness where I belong
The light demands attention
I turn away, but the light is much too hypnotic
I walk towards the pulsating source,
and am captured in its whirling sparkles
That's where I am,
my life is no longer -
- my life IS the light

This poem was inspired by a certain famous movie star. Keanu Reeves visited my fair city to play Hamlet in a local theatre's production. During this time, the people of the city went wild with trying to catch a glimpse of stardom and paid any amount for a ticket to the play. The poem describes how people worship their idols and forget about their own lives, making nothing of themselves.
