Please, Dad by Michael Anderson
As soft winds sweep away the days
I look back on life through a haze.
Remember playgrounds, parks and friends,
In childlike gaze that never ends.
The laughter in a game of catch,
Shall memory ever attach...
To innocence in youthful eyes,
Catching the ball to Dad's surprise.
I recall my first bike, first wreck,
Who picked me up, said, "What the heck?"
Convinced me to give one more try,
While, knees skinned, I forgot to cry.
Just the joy knowing he was there,
Making him proud my only care.
There was nothing I couldn't do,
My heart held fast that to be true.
Though teenage years were kind of rough,
I sure wasn't too big or tough.
You taught me to defend what's right
And never back down from a fight.
So I learned the hard way to stand,
Still, with each lump, I found your hand.
Drawing from you an inner strength,
And stubborn pride of equal length.
But there the line of fate was drawn,
As though I blinked and you were gone.
I found myself facing the sun,
Not man, not boy, fatherless, one.
Eyes blinded by a void inside,
I could not live that you had died.
Alas finding it to be true,
I could do nothing without you.
Please, Dad, today just hear my call,
I'm sorry that I dropped the ball.
My life is wrecked, my knees are skinned,
My emotions undisciplined.
I can't get up although I try,
Please don't be upset if I cry.
Though I can't fight what I can't see,
Please, Dad, say you're still proud of me.
I look back on life through a haze.

How can you live when the best part of you dies? Where do you draw strength when your sole source of strength is taken from you?
This poem explores the loss of my father and the impact it had on my life. Even now, 6 years later, I can't seem to grasp the straws together to make my life whole again. Every day I fight with an enemy I cannot see. The one thing my father never taught me how to do.

| Hey, I really liked your poem, it touched me, I know what it's like to loose someone like that, a really close friend, family member or heck, even a pet. I've gone through many stages in my life and I'm not even 16 yet, I'm 14. I never really had a dad, my real one left when I was only 9 days old, and I really miss him. everybody tells me how cool or mean thier father is, but I always tell them to love him because its true-you don't know what you got till it's gone. But I hope you keep on writing, I really enjoy reading yours, thank you. -Kassandra - Kassandra | |

| Trust me, your father is very proud of you. I had the same question when my father committed suicide when I was just 12. It was always a question of whether or not I did things to meet his approval. I'm only 23 now, but I have learned that in the eyes of a father, his little girl can do no wrong. So I'm sure the same goes for his little boy. - Michelle | |

| I lose my father too and nothing in this world can ease this kind of pain. I dropped the ball too and I ask to myself: Will he still be proud of me? He taught me to never give up. he taught me to love. He told me crying wasn't sign of weakness but strenght. He taught me to fight. He taught me to love and let the others love me too. He taught me that between the darkness there is always a light. He taught me so many things. But there's a thing he never taught me so I never learned: How I am going to live without you? How I am going to fight if the strenght that kept me from falling is not here anymore? - Banshee | |

| i know how u feel it happened to me. it kills ur heart and u feel like u want to die. i hold my life in my fathers hands i cry for him and his face every night. it felt like the world ended in one short sentence. mine came to me as a "ur father is not coming home today. ur not going to be seeing him for some time now. sorry it had to end this way. " and that was that i became homeless helpless and lifeless, all i wanted was to die. my mother had my father had what hope was there for me. ur poem was good. hope ur life is better then mine. love kell - kell | |

| I loved this poem because I am a single mother and this poem reflects the kind of father that I want my ex to be to our daughter. But he is too busy with his life and considers our daughter an inconvenience. Please tell the author to feel lucky that he had the chance to experience what a lot of us only dream about. I grew up without a father because he died when I was two and I was hoping that my daughter would be able to have her father in her life but it doesn't seem to be in the cards. - Janet | |

| I really liked this poem. It reminds me of my father who died when I was 14. Many people don't know how lucky they are to have a father until one day, all of the sudden he's gone. Not knowing what how it happen and just being left out in the cold is an awful feeling, but know no matter how hard I cry it isn't going to bring him back. Now its been a year and a half and the pain is still here and I know its never going to go away. Even though he's not here anymore I would have loved to tell him how much I loved him before he left me. People need to charish every second with there families. - cindie | |

| This poem bought back the memories of me and my dearest dad. Knowing someone all your life you would think that they would be always be here. My loving father died last year October 16, 2003 three days after my 20th b-day. I surely do miss him. Am writing and I want to cry, you expressing yourself in this poem shows that memories do last long and once you remember the good memories they will forever be in your heart even if it's bad they will linger with you. To all those who still have a father respect, love and adore them while they are alive because you don't know when it's their last like my mother always say " You don't miss the well till the water runs dry. - Tamika | |

| This is a really good poem. I don't know exactly how you feel about losing your dad, but in a way I do. I haven't lost my dad, but he is in Iraq currently with the war. I haven't seen him in over a year and hardly ever get to talk to him. I miss all the things we used to do together and it makes me sad when I think about this coming May, when I graduate from High School knowing he won't be there. I don't know what I would do if I were to lose him, just him being away for so long is making me go crazy. So I can't say exactly I know how you feel, but I can say I'm always here for those who need someone to talk to. - Cindy | |

| This is a great poem Michael. it represents a father and sons deep and close attachment to one another, which is something I always hoped for my son and husband. It touches my heart to know and see how close you were to your father. My son from the time he was very little wanted his father to be close to him, and my husband has always pushed him away, and I don't know why. to this day at 17 years of age (my son) he longs to still have his father admire him and be close, and sadly to say. my husband isn't. I am forwarding your poem to my husband to let him know, that boys, and young men, long for their fathers to be proud of them. - Karen | |

| This peom was very touching. Although I am still a teenager I already feel as though I have lost my dad, he doesn't pay much attention to me because he has a new family and i went away with the seperated wife. He never really tought me how to catch a ball (eventhough I am a girl) I had to learn form my older sister because he did not care as much as she did. She understands what I feel because she has a different father than mine and she knows the reject as well as I do. So thank you for writing this peom because you made me feel like I had a dad still (which I still do, but is not a part of me) that could still teach me how to catch a ball and push me through life knowing that he loves me although i do not think thta will happen soon. So thank you for telling about how much you and your dad had a great relationship. - lauren | |

| My father is in the hospital as I write. He was in a horrible car accident monday of last week (7 days). He has less than a 50 50 chance. He was really broken up and he's not doing good at all. I'd tell you about it but there's really no reason to upset anyone else. I've been to the hospital every day and once in a great while he opens his eyes. Yesterday. he mouthed the words "I love you" and winked at me. Then he passed out again, it took so much of his energy just to do that. Your poem hit hard and was beautiful. Thank you for letting me read it. - TINA | |

| I love this poem-I cried when I read it. I printed it out and went to the cemetary and put it on my dad's grave, then talked to him for 1 1/2 hours. My dad was shot to death 3 months ago when he got in the line of fire in a drive by fire. If he hadnt taken that bullet, a little girl that was standing there would have been killed instead. Still, when I saw my dad's body on that sidewalk, I felt like a part of me had died along with him. I loved my dad so much. I turned 14 last month, and I know my daddy was there, smiling at me as I blew out my candles, as he had done every birthday before that. - Destiny | |
